Fifth Ordinary Custodial Chapter in Ghana

The first part of the fifth Ordinary Chapter of the Provincial Custody of Ghana, West Africa (Padua), was held from November 30 through December 3 in Elmina, Ghana.

The Chapter was presided over by the Minister Provincial of Padua, Friar Gianni Cappelletto, also present was the Assistant General for AFCOF, Friar Tadeusz Świątkowski.

The following elections took place on the third day of the proceedings:
Provincial Custos – Friar Borotolino Maistrello (2nd term); Custodial Vicar – Friar Joseph Blay; Secretary of the Custody – Friar Anthony Akumah; and Definitor – Friar Charles Bruno Kabir.

The Custody has 18 Friars, 7 Italians, 1 Romanian, and 10 Ghanaians. Friar Simon Muriithi, from the Custody of Kenya, and the Novice Master at Saltpong, along with Friar Valentino Maragno, Province Secretary for the Missions and Provincial Definitor from Padua, were both invited to the Chapter.

The Custody also has 17 Friars in temporary profession studying Philosophy and Theology, 4 novices, and 14 postulants. The Friars are located in 4 Friaries, Accrá, Saltpond, Takoradi, and Sunyani. Their service to the Church of Ghana embraces several pastoral, social, and educational areas, as well as communications through their publishing house in the spirit of St. Maximilian Kolbe.

During the second part of the Chapter, scheduled for December 7-9, the Friars of the Custody plan on discussing the priorities for the next four years and making some decisions on how to continue a significant presence in this country.
