Taking inspiration from the appeal of the organizing committee of the International Chapter of Mats to all the Provincials and the Custodes of the First Order Franciscans and the TOR to design in their own jurisdictions a type of Chapter of Mats as a Spiritual formation and preparation for the extraordinary event of International Chapter of Mats to be held in Assisi – Rome from April 15 – 18, 2009, we decided to conduct a Spiritual Chapter with the name Chapter of Mats.

The chapter was held at Franciscan Centre in the Spirit of Assisi, at our Provincialate from January 27 – 29, 2009. The Chapter was officially inaugurated by V. Rev. Fr. Samuel Chetcuti, Minister Provincial of Malta who was the first Missionary from Malta to establish the Indian Mission.

The chapter was animated by Rev. Fr. Peter Damian Massengill, Guardian of the General Curia. His clear and precise ideas and thoughts were a helping hand for the participants to renew and deepen their knowledge of our Rule. The core idea of his conferences was the present relevance of the Rule of St. Francis that was written in the 13th Century and how we can apply it to our socio-cultural situations of today and make our way of life relevant in the 21st Century.

All the professed members of the Province residing in India and the Novices participated in the Chapter.

At the beginning of the chapter, Rev. Fr. Samuel Chetcuti was honored with an honorary memento for his pioneer work in establishing the Indian Mission.
