First Meeting of the International Commission for Mission Animation

Tuesday, 03 February 2009 11:43

The International Commission for Mission Animation, established by the Minister General after the General Chapter of Assisi in 2007, had its first meeting from January 27-30, 2009.  It was received fraternally by the community at Casa Kolbe on Via San Teodoro in Rome.

The members of the Commission, who represent the seven Federations or Conferences of the Order, began by getting to know each other and then shared the present situation of mission promotion in the different jurisdictions.

Then they examined the draft of the Mission Directory prepared last year by a group chosen by the Minister General.  That provided an opportunity for dialogue between the different cultures represented, as well as different insights from within our family about the topic of  "mission and evangelization today."  The rich and interesting contributions of the participants will be included in a new draft which afterwards will be enriched by still other friars with whom the members of the International Commission may meet.  The draft will later be presented to the Minister General and his Definitory for their examination and possible approval ad experimentum.

Then the Commission considered how best to share among the friars and fraternities the richness of the reflections and proposals which emerged from the first Missionary Congress of the Order in India in 2006.

Afterwards the Commission planned its next meeting and the work of its members in their Conferences in the meantime.

In honor of the Apostle to the Gentiles, the Commission made brief pilgrimages to the place where St Paul was killed and where he was buried.

The meeting was a rich experience of "intercultural fraternity", and sketched out a future path for the General Secretariat for Mission Animation, as well as for all the friars committed to mission promotion and to supporting the missions of the Order.
