On the Solemnity of Pentecost, May 11, 2008, the Conventual Franciscan Province of the Protomartyrs in Zambia commissioned three Friars as their first missionaries to the Diocese of Mzuzu in Malawi. They were Friars Linus Mulenga, Abraham Alutuli, and Justin Mulenga.

The Eucharistic Celebration for the commissioning was held in Luanshya township, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Mboya. Many of the faithful attended the Mass. This is the first time Zambia is sending Friars to a new mission, so it was a new experience for the people.

The desire to open the mission in Malawi was first discussed at the Provincial Chapter of 2002, and approved at the Ordinary Provincial Chapter of 2004. The Friars are eager to expend the presence of the Order by taking on this mission. With the support of all the Friars and of our benefactors, the mission in Malawi adds to the presence of the Conventual Franciscan Friars on the global map.
