Secretariat for Mission Animation: The Mission in Sri Lanka

E-mail Print

Last week, Friar Mathew Purayidom, Minister Provincial of the Province of India, made a brief visit to Rome while seeing the Indian Friars who are presently in Europe.

A few months ago, the Province of India opened a new mission in Sri Lanka, at Athurugiriya, close to the Capitol of Colombo. The Archbishop has already asked the Friars to assume a ministry of spiritual assistance to the priests of his Archdiocese.

Friar Mathew said that recently the Friars have purchased a residence that will serve as a Formation House, with the hope of having vocations.

Presently there are two Friars in Sri Lanka: Peter Kannampuzha and Albert Pulliyadan, and it will not be long before they are joined by two other Friars as soon as they have completed their preparation and have participated in the Interfranciscan Course for Missionaries in Brussels.

Besides the mission in Sri Lanka, our Friars have two missions in other States of India outside of Kerala. One in Andhra Pradesh, in Dondapudi and Christianpet, where they are organizing a center for poor children, and the other in Tamil Nadu , at Rottikaundanur, where three months ago, they inaugurated a center for those suffering with AIDS. This center holds 50 people, where the majority of those sick are small children. The Friars are thinking of organizing a school for them in a structure that already exists.
