ASSISI, Sunday, February 17, 2008 - Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, presided at a Eucharistic Celebration in the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, on Sunday, February 17, 2008, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Proclamation of St. Clare as the Patroness of Television. Also present were the Vicar General, Friar Jerzy Norel, representing the Minister General, and Friar Vincenzo Coli, General Custos of the Sacred Convent.

The naming of St. Clare as Patroness of Television was done by Pope Pius XII on February 14, 1958, because Clare, on Christmas night in 1252, was able to observe from her cell, the celebration going on in the church.

“Saint Clare, said the Vatican Secretary of State, repeating what he has said on Vatican Radio, is not only the Patroness of Television, but is also able to teach us how to respond today to the medium of television.”

Quoting the Pope, Cardinal Bertone warned of the risks of manipulating reality, self serving dominant interests, and the pursuit of the audience at whatever cost.

“Mass media, he added, tends to impose a uniform cultural model, based on a logic of consumerism and relativism.”

“The example of St. Clare, on the other hand, helps us to rediscover the dignity of the person and the value of the family, life, and the education of youth”, concluded his remarks.
