A New Jurisdiction of the Order in Africa/Tanzania

To the greater Glory and Praise of God, for the benefit of God’s People of Tanzania’s Catholic Church, as well as for the growth of the Order of Conventual Franciscan Friars – in 800th Anniversary of the Franciscan Charism, on 14th August 2009 in memory of 68th Anniversary of St. Maximilian’s martyrdom – a new Provincial Custody of St. Maksymilian Ma Kolbe in Tanzania/East Africa, was erected.

His Em. Polikarp Cardinal Pengo, the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam presided over the Holy Eucharist in the Segerea Parish of Conventual Franciscans, inaugurating the New Custody and then after blessing a newly constructed Custodial House. Many guests – friars, priests, sisters and other visitors form Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Poland and Rome participated in the celebration.

The New Custody was created from the Provincial Delegation initiated in the year 1988, as a Mission of the Warsaw Province/Poland. It consists of 15 friars, 10 Polish and 5 Tanzanians, and other young Tanzanians who are still on various formation stages. The Custody has at present four friaries. Its friars serve the Church in the following activities: 3 parishes, a formation house for the candidates to the Order, spiritual assistance to the religious, teaching in the Religious Colleges,  mass-media of Marian character, mission schools and other social activities.

On August 18th the first Custodial Chapter will take place, during which the first Provincial Custos will be elected. It will be presided over by the Minister General of the Order, Revmo fr. Marco Tasca. In the Chapter will also take part the Minister Provincial of Warsaw’s Province, fr. Mirosław Bartos and the Assistant General for Africa/Afcof, fr. Tadeusz Świątkowski.

With this new jurisdiction, the Afcof Federation consists of: Province of Zambia, Provincial Custodies of Ghana/Padova Province, Kenya/Gdańsk Province-PL, and Tanzania/Warsaw Province-PL, as well as of Provincial Delegations of Burkina Faso/Warsaw & Abruzzo Provinces and Uganda/Kraków Province-PL and one Mission in Malawi/Zambia Province. Together our Order is present in 7 African countries.
