The community of  St. Bonaventure and the Pontifical Faculty St. Bonaventure of the Seraphicum  announces the sudden and unexpected death of  Maestro Alfonso Pompei today, July 14, the Vigil of the Feast of St. Bonaventure, of whom the deceased established a great cult.

Friar Alfonso, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty, was born on April 16, 1924 in Rome. Entering the College at the Sacred Convent in Assisi, he made temporary profession on July 18. 1941, and Solemn Profession on April 16. 1945; he was then ordained to the Priesthood on March 27, 1948. He acquired his Doctorate in Theology, and became part of the teaching body at the Pontifical Theological Faculty St. Bonaventure, which at that time was located at Via San Teodoro in Rome.

Teacher of numerous lists of students in our Order, both in Italy and abroad, he developed an appreciation of Franciscan Spirituality, leaving an inheritance of a precious patrimony of complete studies of eminent figures of our Family, giving a provocative connection to our Order with its history. The Seraphic Father, whom he honored with his writings and his life, certainly numbers him among his special sons.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

The funeral will be July 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the large Chapel of the Seraphicum.
