With the reflections of Fr. Guy Labonté, Secretary of the Mission Center in Brazil, the Friars of the Province of St. Maximilian Kolbe opened their discussion on “The Mission in the Amazon”.

All of the Friars of the Province were present, along with Bishop Agostinho Stefan, OFM Conv. and Friar Janusz Danescki, two of the first Friars to arrive in the area of Juruá in the Amazon. They offered their contributions by speaking of being attentive to the necessities of the people in the missionary areas where the Friars were invited by Bishop Sérgio Eduardo Castriani, CSSp.

Encouraged, at the beginning, by the example of Bishop Agostinho Stefan, who had been at Juruá for three years, the Friars of the Ordinary Chapter of 2007 discussed and approved a mission in that area. Following this Spiritual Chapter, on July 8, the Minister Provincial, Friar Norberto de Moura Cruz and Friar Jorge Luiz Soares will leave for the cities of Tefé and Juruá to look over the situation for the possible development of a community in Tefé where the Friars would like to establish a place for initial formation that one day in the future will serve the indigenous poor of the forest.

The Spiritual Chapter ended with an openness of heart and mind to the establishment of our Order in the Brazilian Amazon, where the Brazilian Episcopal Conference has encouraged religious especially, to take up service to those populations that have been without a priest for many years.
