Course of On-going Formation for Young Conventual Franciscans from Africa

As it is already our tradition (since the year 2000), also this year our Order has created an opportunity for our young Brothers in Africa to participate in an On-going Formation Course in Italy.

The main purpose of this Course is to give an opportunity to the younger generation of our Order to experience the spirit and history of the places connected to Saint Francis and our Origins.

In Africa our Order is present in seven countries: Zambia (1930), Ghana (1979), Kenya (1984), Tanzania (1988), Uganda (2001), Burkina Faso (2001), and the recently opened mission in Malawi (May 2008).

This Formation Course has taken place from June 1–22 in Assisi, Padua and Rome. Eleven friars from Zambia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania & Burkina Faso, in their 10 years of Solemn Profession and Priestly Ordination, have taken part in it.

The Course was organized by the Assistant General for AFCOF in collaboration with the other friars who tried to introduce the Brothers in Africa the realities of our Franciscan Charism as well as the challenges which our Order is facing at the XXI century.

Among the numerous meetings, these young friars also met the Minister General in Assisi/Rivotorto, who challenged them to work hard in introducing our Franciscan Charism into the multicultural reality of the African continent.

The friars are immensely grateful to the Order, to Minister General and especially to the communities who have fraternally welcomed them (Assisi/Rivotorto, Padua/San Massimo, Rome/Seraphicum) for this extraordinary and unique experience – probably for some of them the only one in their life.
